Guangdong Research Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower
Guangdong Research Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower(GRIWH),Established in 1958, evaluated by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province as “a commonweal research institute that embodies Guangdong’s advantages and characteristics” in 1999 and “a nonprofit scientific institution” in 2004,is one of the best provincial comprehensive institute that carries out research and in water resources and hydropower in China.
GRIWH employs 408 staff, with technical members over 80 percent, is a powerful, experienced, enthusiastic and excellent professional team. Among them, 7 experts enjoy special allowance given by the State Council, 20 are professor senior engineers, 57senior engineers, and 45 engineers, 14 are doctors and 38 masters.
GRIWH consists of 9 research departments, 3 provincial key lab and 4 provincial class professional and technical centers. They are Research Department of Hydraulic Engineering, River and Harbour, Agricultural water conservancy and ecological engineering, Geotechnique, Structure and Engineering Material, Survey & Design, Hydraulic Machinery, Hydro-information, Hydraulic Key Scientific Base, Water Resources Experiment Base and Hydrodynamic Research Key Lab of Guangdong Province, Guangdong Monitoring and Examination Center of Hydraulic Engineering Quality, Guangdong Hydropower and Pump Testing Center, Guangdong Irrigation Research Center, and Guangdong Hydro-information Center. Further more, the journal of Guangdong Water Resources and Hydropower(bimonthly) is edited and published in the Institute.
GRIWH owns 20 large-scale labs, with total in-door areas of 70,000 m2 . The labs are equipped with a great variety of modern advanced testing facilities, such as large-scale wave-generator for regular and irregular waves, etc. Guangdong Water Resources Experiment Base in Feilaixia, about 84,000 m2 in size, is capable of undertaking large-size physical model tests, such as the model test for the eight estuaries of the Pearl river delta regulation work. In addition to uptodate equipment of survey control, the Experiment Base is armed with “Guangdong Experiment Measurement and Control System of Water Resources” – a new-type ethernet-based measurement and control System for hydraulic model tests.
GRIWH possesses 7 Class-A qualifications for engineering consulting, water and soil conservancy, survey and evaluation of hydrology and water resources, demonstration of water resources for construction projects, safety evaluation of large and medium-size reservoirs, monitoring of water and soil conservation, and geotechnical engineering (survey, design, consultation and supervision), and one Class-B qualification in engineering design of water resources.
In the past 49 years, GRIWH has made great contributions to the development of water resources and hydropower, and other related fields such as communication and energy resources construction, etc. We resolved many technical difficulties for a great number of projects, including the Three Gorges, Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, Guangzhou Pumped-Storage Power Station, Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply Engineering, Feilaixia Key Water-Control Project, Guangzhou Metro, Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, and Guangdong Three-River Nuclear Power Station, etc. As one of the editors in chief, we compiled the “Design Guide for Coastal Levee Projects of Guangdong Province” which is not only the first local technical standard formally issued in Guangdong’s hydro system, but also the first construction standard for costal levees in China. Besides, we participated in compiling many other technical standard, including the “Guangdong Provincial Technical Specifications of Foundation Treatment”, “Guangdong Provincial Technical Specifications of Standard Brad Support” and “Guangzhou Technical Specifications of Construction Pit Support”。
GRIWH has been working with many universities to train senior talents like masters and doctoral students, and also held many national and international academic conferences. Recently, 24 items have been awarded the Science and Technical Progress Prizes granted by the State, the Ministry of Water Resources and Guangdong Province. In 1999, GRIWH was awarded the “Labor Model Unit of China” by Chinese Labor Union.
